Happy Valentines Day

What a weekend!! Two Late night gigs and church service Sunday morning. It is enough to make me crash that afternoon. I didn't. My wife and I went to my parents house and spent some time with them.

I've been going back and forth with school. It will not surprise me if I end up going back.

Back to the gigs; I always feel at the end of the night that I want to play even more. There was a period of about 1.5 years ( August 2004- November 2005) that I just didn't want to perform anymore. I got tired of doing all of the footwork for a 50-75 dollar gig. What I realized is that I love playing and I'm in control of how much I can make per gig ( especially if I'm the leader). When I decided to play more and try to get my name back out there, the calls started to come in. Except for last month, I've had an average of 5 gigs every month ( about 1-2 a week). For someone who is a full time teacher and husband, that's pretty good. I want to average about 15 gigs per month; that's my goal. I am also building a studio so that I can do some recording and composing in other genres. Stay tuned.

What a Day

What a day so far. Today I'm reminded that I deal with kids and they usually don't know how to control themselves. This is one of those days that I start reconsidering being an educator in the public schools. If fell like I'm just wasting my time ( I know that's not true; it's just how I feel right now). Most of the kids at my school I really enjoy being around. It is usually a few kids who make the whole class worse.

On a lighter note, I got a call last night to perform at the new Georgia Aquarium tonight (2/10) and another gig on 2/25 for the pregame show of the Atlanta Hawks. I've been wanting to get back out and start gigging.

A New Direction

I have been thinking about pursuing a doctorate degree in music for quite some time. My problem is that I really don't know if I want to spend my time in education. Yes, I do enjoy being around my students and I definately enjoy seeing their reaction to finally understanding the things I attempt to teach them.

The last time I was in School was from 2001-2004. At that time I was getting my P-12 certification in music (My BM and MM were in Jazz Studies). I didn't really have a good experience at ________. Part of the problem was that I didn't really want to go back to school. I got a job as an elementary band director servicing 5 schools (AAAHHHGHHH!) I was struggling to keep a program at five different schools. The traveling, the different school climates and the different leadership styles of 5 principals were enough to drive me crazy. I finally decided to leave at the end of the 2004-2005 school year.

If I do decide to go back to school, I think the circumstance would be different. I just don't know if I really want to pursue education or some other avenue of music, i.e production, arranging and performance.
