I had the opportunity to sit in with an Atlanta area Big Band, The Usual Suspects. The lead alto player could not make rehearsal and I got the call. Hopefully this will lead to more opportunities with them. They sound great and the rehearsal was productive. One thing I can't stand is un-productive rehearsals and time wasting, but I think we all have that pet peeve.
On another note, I had a private student just say that she just doesn't practice. Never mind the waste of time and money, it's just stupid. Why drive to someone's teaching studio and practice. This was the student's last lesson because of a scheduling conflict I have and this person can only come on Mondays.
By the way...It's not a waste of my time. I get paid whether they practice or not. If they don't pay, 90% of the time I won't teach them. I've had situations where parents have been upset because I didn't go ahead and teach their kid. I just remind them that their lessons have to be paid for before I teach them. IF it's someone who's making great progress and parents just forgot, I handle the situation different.
